Michael Hussey Biography

Michael Hussey is an Australian international cricket player, who was born on May 27, 1975 in Morley, Western Australia. David Hussey, his younger brother is also a cricketer, who plays for Australia. He is married to Amy and they have three children. Nicknamed “Huss”, “The Huss”, and “Mr. Cricket”, Michael Hussey is primarily a left-handed batsman and can also bowl medium pace.

On November 3, 2005, Michael Hussey made his Test debut for the Australian national cricket team in a series against the West Indies in which he came in as a substitute for Justin Langer, a teammate. In the following match of this series, Michael Hussey scored his maiden century, a 137 in the first innings and remained not out at 31 in the second one and was named the Man of the Match for his impressive performance.

During the 2005-06 South African tour of Australia, Michael Hussey set up a 107-run 10th wicket partnership with Glen McGrath, following which he scored his career best score, 182, which came in a 320-run partnership with Jason Gillespie in a Spring 2006 2-test series match against Bangladesh. On April 18, 2006, he set a record by notching up 1000 runs in Test matches in only 166 days, which is the fastest as of 2008.

His 20th Test innings came in the first innings of the first match at the 2006-07 Ashes series, during which he scored 86 runs and earned the second place in the all-time batting average list for his batting average of 99.94, only next to Sir Donald Bradman. Michael Hussey also became one of the quickest players to reach the top 10 of the International Cricket Council (ICC) cricket ratings. He maintained a commendable average of 105.25 throughout the Ashes series, and helped his team to a 5-0 win.

During the Warne-Muralidaran Trophy against Sri Lanka, Michael Hussey scored two Test centuries and also set up a 254 run partnership with Michael Clarke, a teammate, which became the third highest fourth-wicket partnership against Sri Lanka. As of 2008, he has played a total of twenty five test matches, scoring 2325 runs, his best being 182.

On February 1, 2004, Michael Hussey made his One Day International (ODI) debut in a 5-wicket win against India. On February 6, 2006, his impressive performances earned him the Australian One-Day Player of the Year award at the annual Allan Border Medal presentation. Michael Hussey became ICC's ODI Player of the Year and was also named in ICC World ODI XI team on November 3, 2006 at the annual ICC Awards in Mumbai.

Michael Hussey captained Australia for the first time in the DLF Cup second round match against West Indies and set up a 165-run partnership with his team mate, Brad Haddin, which became a world record sixth-wicket partnership in all ODIs. In the first match of the 2008 ODI series in Bangladesh, Michael Hussey was named as the Man of the Match for his top score of 85 runs, following which he scaled to the second rank in the ICC ODI Player Rankings. He has featured in 93 ODIs, scoring 2457 runs, his highest being 109*.

On February 17, 2005, Michael Hussey played his first Twenty20 international (T20I) match for the Australian team against New Zealand. He was as a part of the Australian squad that reached the semi-finals in the 2007 ICC World T20 and played all matches for Australia during this tournament. As of 2008, he has played in twelve T20 international matches and has amassed 137 runs altogether.

Michael Hussey signed with the Chennai Super Kings team for a deal worth $350,000 and played four matches in the 2008 Indian Premier League (IPL), contributing to the team’s three-match winning streak. Michael Hussey marked his presence in the IPL by becoming the second player to score a century, 116* in a league match against Kings XI Punjab.
